“Man Is Not a Wolf to Man”

The world is now in an unprecedented crisis: wars and civil wars are raging on several fronts — in Ukraine, Israel/Palestine, Sudan, Myanmar, Yemen, the Democratic Republic of Congo, with outbreaks of violence in many other crisis areas. At least two of these conflicts – in Ukraine and in Southwest Asia – have the potential to escalate into a world war that destroys civilization. The tariff and trade war initiated by President Trump could lead to the collapse of the already fragile global financial system. The world has come unhinged.

We are in the midst of an epochal change that is no less dramatic than the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era, when there was a fundamental redefinition of the image of man and of the notions of the state and the universe. In a similar way today, the idea of the order that should prevail among nations is changing. The crucial difference is that while the nations of the Global South are increasingly aware of the dimensions of this upheaval, the Western establishment continues to cling to long-outdated ideas about its privileged position in the world.

The idea of the dominance of one nation, as it emerged after the Second World War, or even the idea of a unipolar world, as advocated by some after the end of the Cold War, has given way to a multipolar world, but one which is not yet supported by any structure or stability.

The economic rise of China and the emergence of the BRICS states are enabling the nations of the Global South to take their economic development into their own hands, leaving behind 500 years of colonialism, including in its modern form of IMF conditionalities, in order to achieve a decent standard of living in the foreseeable future. Everyone who cares about a positive future for mankind should welcome this development

Instead of that, part of Europe is committed to a massive militarization of the continent and a continuation of geopolitical confrontation. European Union member states are hesitant to admit failure in Ukraine, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán. The entire West waged a “proxy war” against Russia and lost it, he said, and losing a war is a very serious thing, that will have a huge impact on the entire West.

As a result of the denial of this reality, Europe to want to continue the war, while President Trump is attempting to once again normalize relations with Russia.

In such a complex strategic situation, with ever more crises arising, a way out must be found at a higher level than that on which the crises arose – at the level of reason. Mankind is the only known species in the universe that is endowed with creative reason. And this reason dictates that we define a solution that takes into account the interests of mankind as a whole. We should and therefore we can create a new security and development architecture that fulfills the interests of every nation on this planet. If the West had responded to Russia’s legitimate demands for legally binding security guarantees, the war in Ukraine would never have occurred. We in Europe will always remain neighbors to Russia and we need to urgently normalize relations.

The greater part of humanity is already striving in this direction. The BRICS member and partner states already represent 53 percent of the world’s population, and they are in the process of creating a new form of cooperation on the basis of the UN Charter and the Five Principles of Peaceful Cooperation, which is not based on geopolitical confrontation but on friendship and cooperation for mutual benefit.

The way out for us in Europe is actually very simple. The Trump shock should have the effect of freeing us, finally, from our existence as vassals, and above all, we must reject the oligarchical dictum that “man is a wolf to man”, as well as the philosophy of all empires which this conviction underlies. Rather, we must introduce a new chapter of peace in the history of mankind. As soon as we express our willingness to cooperate with the BRICS and the Global Majority, we will be welcomed with open arms by the majority of the world’s population. This will be all the easier if we return to the classical culture of Europe and revive the great concept of mankind on which this culture is based, which sees man as inherently good and capable of unlimited perfection. We only need to revive our classical culture, and then our great poets and composers such as Dante, Rabelais, Shakespeare, Schiller, Heine, Pushkin, Petöfi, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, to name but a few, will form the basis for a dialogue of cultures with the nations of the Global Majority.

The bestial conception of the ideologue of the English Enlightenment, Thomas Hobbes, that man is a wolf to man, must be rejected once and for all, as must all forms of empire and colonialism for which he was the ideologue. We must write a new chapter in the history of mankind that reflects the dignity and creative potential of the human individual.

To discuss this perspective and to promote a dialogue with the Global South, an international conference will take place in Berlin, Germany, on July 12-13, 2025,  to which you are cordially invited.
