Can Trump Strike a "Better" Nuclear Deal with Iran?
Sunday June 22 • 5:00 - 6:00 PM EDT

by The Middle East Forum of Falmouth

note: The topic of this lecture was organized prior to Israel’s attack. No doubt the discussion will be different than originally planned, especially (as Seymour Hersh has predicted) if the U.S. joins the attack directly this weekend…

Nuclear talks with Iran have progressed in some aspects further in three months under Donald Trump than under Joe Biden’s full presidency. However, mixed messages from Trump regarding his key objectives and red lines have dampened earlier optimism. His super-envoy Steve Witkoff has stated that Trump’s red line is not weaponization but enrichment of uranium as a whole. From Tehran's standpoint, zero-enrichment is not only a non-starter, but a diplomacy-stopper. Trump clearly wants a deal, but can he secure a deal - let alone a "better" deal – if he insists on demands that Iran has historically never accepted? And if he fails, will the US gravitate towards war with Iran?

Trita Parsi, PhD is the executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He is an expert on US-Iranian relations, Iranian foreign policy, and the geopolitics of the Middle East. The author of four books on US foreign policy in the Middle East, his articles are widely published, and he is a regular guest on major international news programs.  He is frequently consulted by Western and Asian governments and has been called “one of the most distinguished scholars on Iran.”
