March 16, 2025, at 2 p.m. at BAM Rose Cinemas, 30 Lafayette Ave, Brooklyn, NY

ArteEast is thrilled to present a special screening of Leila and the Wolves followed by post-screening conversation with director Heiny Srour!

Leila and the Wolves, Heiny Srour, Lebanon, 1984, 90 min.

In New York, the film will be screened at the Brooklyn Academy of Music March 14-March 20; Srour will join for post-screening discussion on March 14 and 16. BAM is also screening her documentary The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived March 16-19.

Drawing on the Arab heritage of the ‘Arabian Nights’, Leila and the Wolves combines fictional drama, archival footage, fantasy sequences, mosaic pattern, to refute the colonial and male dominated version of History.

Born in 1945 in Beirut, Heiny Srour studied Sociology at the French University of Beirut (Ecole Supérieure des Lettres) and went on to study Social Anthropology at the Sorbonne in Paris, where she was a student of both Marxist sociologist Maxime Rodinson and anthropologist filmmaker Jean Rouch. It took her six years to achieve her film, Leila and the Wolves (1984), in which she unveiled the hidden histories of women in struggle, in particular in Palestine and Lebanon, by weaving an aesthetically and politically ambitious tableau of history, folklore, myth and archival footage.
