Defending Dissent: A Discussion on Palestine, Freedom of Speech and the Future of Protest at the Netroots Nation Conference
Join Just Vision for a featured panel discussion at the Netroots Nation Conference at the Baltimore Convention Center (1 W Pratt St), "Defending Dissent: A Discussion on Palestine, Freedom of Speech and the Future of Protest." A growing protest movement concerned by the Israeli government’s war on Gaza has emerged in the United States. While political leaders in the United States remain widely committed to galvanizing unchecked support of the State of Israel and arming its military without condition, those protesting these actions and calling for an immediate ceasefire are being met with extreme oppression, facing expulsion from their universities, loss of jobs, doxing and, at times, arrest and violence from police. The targeting of those calling for Palestinian rights and critiquing Israeli government policy has a long history in the United States. This timely conversation will explore the many forms that the repression of dissent related to Israel-Palestine has taken over the past decade, ranging from anti-boycott legislation to the arrest of student protestors, and hear from leading experts about the state of dissent in this current moment.
Moderated by Executive Director & President of Just Vision, Suhad Babaa, with panelists including Just Vision's Outreach Associate, Fadi Abu Shammalah, Staff Attorney at Palestine Legal, Sabiya Ahamed, President of the Foundation for Middle East Peace, Lara Friedman, Executive Director of the center for Constitutional Rights, Vincent Warren and the Director of Strategic Communications & Outreach at Diaspora Alliance and co-founder of IfNotNow, Simone Zimmerman.
