What was the last piece of news you read about Gaza? Where did you read it? Since 7 October, the global media has had its eye on Gaza, but the reality of our industry today means that much of this coverage is laced with pro-Israel bias, lacking context and dangerously dehumanizing to Palestinians. Pro-Palestinian voices are often misrepresented and vilified by media outlets, perpetuating harmful stereotypes. Meanwhile, Israeli voices and policies are given far more airtime and far less criticism.
With at least 35,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza so far - and at least 105 of them journalists - the implications of this failure of mainstream media can not be understated. At stake is not only the lives of countless more innocent people, but public trust in the media to provide real information and real facts - both in Gaza and all around the world.
Independent news has never been more important for real coverage on Gaza. To mark Indie News Week, New Internationalist and Declassified UK are co-hosting a panel discussion titled ‘Why we need indie media for real coverage on Gaza.’ Collectively, we have been deeply invested in reporting on Palestine since well before 7 October, with coverage including the rise of ecofascism, the persecution of Palestinian journalists, the role of the UK in the arms trade with Israel, and the ordinary Palestinians fighting for their very right to survive.
Beholden to no one, with no corporate interests and no billionaires influencing our coverage, we need readers like you to support outlets like ours to provide a vital public service that is increasingly under threat.
