On the Edge: War and Public Health in Gaza
SPEAKERS: Abdul latif Alhossiny / Zeina Amr
ORGANIZING OFFICE: Institute for Palestine Studies
LANGUAGE: Arabic
SITE: Online Streaming via Zoom
ABOUT THE EVENT: From the seventh of October 2023 until now, Gaza is still subjected to a cruel war that targets the lives of its residents and all the necessities of life in it, especially public health, including the destruction of infrastructure, buildings, water, food, agricultural land, roads, health services (hospitals and health centers), education, the economy, and a viable environment. Preventing the delivery of food and medicine, cutting off water and electricity, and preventing the entry of medical devices and fuel necessary for pumping, desalination and wastewater treatment. Hundreds of thousands of cases, especially respiratory infections and diarrhoea, have been detected due to overcrowding among the displaced, poor hygiene levels, water pollution, scarcity of medicine and food, inability to deal with non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cancer, lack of medicines and treatments, not to mention the impact of war on mental health, quality of life and suffering. This dialogue meeting addresses the tragic situation of public health in the Gaza Strip, and identifies its needs and priorities in light of the limited capabilities and systematic destruction of the health sector.
