10/19 Reporting the Israel Hamas Conflict

Thursday, October 19, 1:30 PM EDT

Sponsored by The Media Society

The unprecedented incursion by Hamas into Israel and Israel’s military response have dominated the news outlets since the story broke – and there are new developments by the hour.

But alongside the conflict, there is another battle – the media battle. Misinformation, disinformation and propaganda on social media. The difficulties and danger of reporting from Gaza. The decisions that are being made in newsrooms around the world about what images to show in newspapers and on TV news programmes. Even the use of words, such as the word terrorist, is being hotly debated by journalists, viewers and politicians.

One correspondent in Israel, Channel 4’s Secunder Kermani, said that the biggest challenge reporting this conflict was “just how emotive it is… every word you say is being scrutinised and is likely to be contested by one side or the other, or both”.

The Media Society is organising a quick-turnaround special Zoom panel discussion to debate the important media issues that have come to the fore during this conflict.

Our Panel

Dr James Rodgers - Former Gaza correspondent, author of books on Israel and Gaza, and now a Reader in International Journalism at City University.

More panellists to be announced soon...
