Global Fascism, with Matteo Capasso (The People's Academy: Ch.2, Unit 6)
Fascism is often treated as an aberration — a deviation from some expected political norm. It is described as an expression of political violence, as national chauvinism, as militarism, or as racism.
As we have seen in Chapter 1, fascism — and especially Nazism — is also used as a rhetorical instrument to exculpate capitalism and liberalism. If the exceptionalization of Hitler provides cover for Europe’s other colonial crimes, the exceptionalization of figures like Trump seeks to cover for the crimes of liberalism today.
It is essential to develop a deeper understanding of fascism that looks beyond mere individuals, institutions, or actions, and considers its systemic character. In fact, fascism is an instrument of capitalism, emerging in historical periods where capitalism and imperialism come under threat.
In Unit 6, we look at fascism as a tool to maintain the current structure of domination at all costs — and the ways in which our forces can mobilize to resist it.
