Turkey's Regional Ascent Amid Democratic Decline

Once seen as a loyal NATO ally, since the breakdown of the rules-based global order, Turkey has emerged as a consequential player at the crossroads of Middle East, Europe, and the Eurasian landmass. Under Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey has a foot in each camp, hedging its relations with NATO and Europe with growing ties with Russia, China, and the Global South. Its soft power, as well as political and military influence, extend well beyond its border into Syria, Iraq, the Caucasus, and the Balkans. But Ankara’s regional ambitions are intertwined with its growing authoritarianism at home, mixing geopolitics with the illiberal governance model.
