Imperialism and International Law (The People's Academy: Ch.2, Unit 4)

Progressive International

Since the start of the genocide in Palestine, international law has been held up as a panacea — a savior of the Palestinian people and a mechanism to hold its Zionist oppressors to account. But is that narrative true? The history of international law — birthed in the contradiction between the exploiters in Europe and exploited outside of it — suggests otherwise. From its inception, international law has been designed both to legitimize colonial oppression and to protect colonizers from claims for reparations — to divide the “civilized” from the “uncivilized”. In Unit 4, we look at international law: what it is, how it was established, and whether it is possible to reconfigure it in the image of the global majority.
