Dissenters Black August Panel: Black Legacy of Rebellion
note: this event is included because of the strong solidarity between the BLM movement in the U.S. and Palestinian liberation, and one of the speakers is an organizer with Artists Against Apartheid
Let's celebrate Black August together by reflecting on the history of Black Rebellion and how it lives on in today's struggles. Join us on August 13th at 6pm ET for a webinar featuring three revolutionary speakers and a cultural act that will send chills down your spine.
Black August originated in the 1970s to commemorate the deaths of Black revolutionaries like George Jackson, Jonathan Jackson, and Khatari Gaulden, while also celebrating resistance against state violence and mass incarceration. Today, it remains a time for study, discipline, fasting, and solidarity with political prisoners.
The panel will feature:
Claudia De la Cruz - Executive director of Pastors for Peace, 2024 presidential candidate for the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
Dr. Kim Holder - Member of the Harlem chapter of the Black Panther Party trained by Assata Shakur. Professor of Africana studies at Rowan University.
Jaylen Strong - poet-worker, librarian curator, and organizer with Artists Against Apartheid.
