Nearly three decades after the signing of the Jordan-Israel peace treaty, the strategic relationship is under growing pressure. Amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza, rising tensions in the West Bank, and increasingly unpredictable dynamics with the Trump administration, Jordan’s ability to sustain the agreement is being tested on multiple fronts.  Has the foundation of the peace agreement fundamentally shifted since October 7 or can the shared threat perceptions between Jordan and Israel remain sufficient to uphold the treaty’s security and political commitments? What confidence-building measures, if any, could preserve bilateral cooperation in a rapidly transforming Middle East?

Farah Bdour is a Senior Advisor at the Palestinian Territories, Egypt, and the Levant (IPEL) program at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, DC. A specialist in conflict resolution and mediation, she served as Director of a Jordanian think tank that provides policy analysis and recommendations to the strategic community in Jordan and internationally, as Jordan Country Director for Seeds of Peace, and is a member of the Middle East Partnership for Peace Act (MEPPA) advisory board, where she contributes to initiatives focused on dialogue, reconciliation, and people-to-people peacebuilding.
