People's Movement Assembly: Organizing Against Travel Bans and More
This event is hosted by Muslims for Just Futures, Project Anar and the Palestinian Youth Movement DMV Chapter (PYM DMV)
with VA: People's Movement Assembly / DMV Organizing Institute / Charlottesville Organizing Institute
Dear Friend,
As I reflect on the summer so far, it has been a disorienting whirlwind. Just over one month ago, this administration released the new travel and entry ban, impacting people from 19 different countries, including 10 Muslim majority countries and 10 African ones.
Since then, nationals from those countries have been further targeted - from the Trump admin ending Temporary Protected Status (which provides work authorization, and protection from deportation) for Haitians, Afghans, and then also separately Nepalis and Cameroonians; to the horrific ongoing starvation of the people of Gaza; and the Israeli and US bombing of Iran.
While the first Muslim ban prompted organic protests in airports across the country, this ban has not been met with the same kind of grassroots response - in part because we are all fighting so many fights to protect immigrant and working class communities. Yet we cannot let this ban stand - if these kinds of bans are normalized, more and more of our communities will be targeted. Join us this Sunday July 20th for a People’s Movement Assembly, bringing together Muslim and other communities from across the DMV to plan and strategize against the travel ban and other anti-immigrant strategies, which include economic attacks on our people. Just before the 4th of July holiday we also saw a serious escalation in the attacks against working people across the country with the passage of Trump's ugly budget bill, which will impact us. All of these policies require a coordinated localized response - join us on Sunday to build out our local strategies against the ban and other harmful policies.
Locally, we are facing important local fights in DC, as we push back against Mayor Bowser's horrific proposed budget that would gut health insurance for immigrant communities, and the attempt to get rid of a planned minimum wage increase by repealing I-82, a referendum passed multiple times by DC communities to eliminate the unfair tipped minimum wage and allow restaurant and other tipped workers to be fairly compensated. Take action below to support local DC fights for a dignified budget for all.
And then join us at our organizing institutes to develop your leadership and build more deeply with us - applications due this Sunday! application - 2025 Muslim Women's Organizing Institute
