Moshe Zuckermann: "Intra-Israeli Impacts of the Gaza War: Social, Political, and Military Aspects" @ Zoom Event

In his lecture, Moshe Zuckermann will talk about topics that are not yet the focus of interest in Germany. We consciously want to gain an insight into the following topics!

What has the war and its consequences (economic consequences, military casualties, hostages, intra-Israeli refugee movements, brain drain) done directly and indirectly to Israeli society? What are the economic consequences, what are the psychological consequences, what are the consequences for the army, what are the political consequences?

More and more Jews around the world are turning away from Israel. Progressive Jewish organizations, intellectuals, artists, and writers play an important role in the protest movements. Is this perceived in Israel? What does that do to Israeli society, to Israeli-Jewish identity? Israel now operates militarily and occupying (Gaza, West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen). There are threats against Iran. Doesn't this lead to an overstretching of Israel's military capabilities in the medium term? In the meantime, there is also said to be discontent in the army. What's the matter?

There are voices that doubt whether there are still enough recruits? What are the reactions within the Orthodox to the law to conscript recruits? Is there an awareness among the Israeli population that this policy is isolating them more and more in the region and large parts of the world? Are there any ideas among the different political currents in Israel about future relations with its Arab neighbors? Are there any ideas that the war in Gaza, the attacks in the West Bank and the attacks on Lebanon and Syria, the threats against Iran and Egypt will also obstruct positive developments and that hope for the expansion of the Abraham Accords will dwindle? Radical settlers are tolerating more and more land annexations and further settlements from the government. Smotrich recently showed in Paris the map of a Greater Israel that includes areas of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the Sinai Peninsula, parts of the eastern Nile Delta.

Are these just madman's crazy ideas, or are there relevant sections of Israeli society that support such extremist Zionist ambitions? There have always been demonstrations in Israel against government policy? What role does the demand for a just solution to the Palestinian question play within the protest movement? Are there any relevant movements left that stand up for any just solution to the Palestinian question? If Netanyahu is voted out of office in the next elections, what is the alternative? Are right-wing forces gaining even more? Or will more moderate forces win? And: Are there still moderate forces at all?

To what extent does the return to religious, historical, meaningful roots play a role?
