Our friends at Social Innovators for Justice have been working hard to break the taboo of speaking about Palestine in work and education settings. I am looking forward to learning from Ariana about this awesome initiative with all of you.
Agenda: Ariana Alexander-Sefre from Social Innovators For Justice Across the UK and beyond, institutions are silencing staff - whether through internal policies (“you can’t discuss politics,” even when it’s a human rights issue), threats of job loss, or a broader culture of fear. But this silence -and the enforcement of these tactics- is what allows atrocities to continue. At SI4J, we created a handbook that sets out, in clear terms, the moral, social and legal responsibilities of employers and HR leaders to uphold their staff’s freedom of speech when it comes to human rights causes. Blocking this right is a direct violation of The Equality Act 2010 in the UK.
We are now moving into phase 2 - a university league table that highlights ethical considerations, such as freedom of speech, response to encampments, investment in arms, and more. We plan to get this published in the weeks before UK students pick their universities, making a dent in the attendance of those who are most complicit. We would love support with this and can talk more in the call.
