By Busboys and Poets
Guest speaker, Atifa Alwazir will discuss What’s Happening in Yemen? History, People, and the Geopolitics of War.
Atiaf Alwazir is an educator and creative writer who believes deeply in the power of education and storytelling to liberate and shape futures. Her action-oriented research, focusing on Yemen, explores social movements, militarism in the digital age, and the intersection between art and politics. Atiaf was the Head of the Peace Program at the Quaker Council for European Affairs (QCEA), where she focused on demilitarizing education. In 2020, Atiaf gave a TEDx talk at UC Berkeley titled "The Other Side of Yemen's War," challenging the singular narratives that dominate discussions on Yemen and reframing orientalist media portrayals. By uplifting personal stories of Yemenis, Atiaf advocates for a more nuanced understanding of the country. In 2011, Atiaf documented the Yemeni uprising, co-founded SupportYemen, a storytelling collective amplifying underrepresented voices, and co-authored Change Square, a photo book capturing the spirit of Yemen’s revolution.
Busboys and Poets Sunday School Cafe is a weekly informal interactive learning community featuring authors, activists, artists, film makers, journalists and other change makers to help us make sense of the world around us.
