Commemorate Palestinian Prisoners Day @ Dar Al Hurriya DC

Join PYM DMV, Black Alliance for Peace, and DC Alliance Against Racist & Political Repression on Sunday, April 27th from 11am-3pm to commemorate Prisoners Day. This event will highlight the solidarity between the Black and Palestinian prisoners’ movements which are forever intertwined in joint struggle to liberation.

Every year, we commemorate April 17 as Palestinian prisoners day, the first being in 1974 when Mahmoud Bakr Hijazi was the first Palestinian political prisoner to be released in a prisoner exchange between Palestinians and the Zionist entity. Since then, commemorations include honoring the martyred, released, and imprisoned Palestinian prisoners and serves as a reminder for the over 10,000 prisoners currently unjustly imprisoned in Israeli prisons. They are subjected to torture and abuse yet remain steadfast in their resolve and dedication to Palestine and the Palestinian people.

The program will include a discussion of the beloved poem “Enemy of the Sun” by Samih Al Qasim, the PYM chorus singing “Ounadikom,” a student panel discussing student repression & arrests, as well as stories and reflections from our community. In addition, we will have a community-created exhibit honoring our prisoners, letter writing to the currently incarcerated Holy Land 5, interactive art, and a children’s Palestinian coloring book station.
