Tim Nafziger will be sharing about his work at Oak Flat in Arizona where Apache Stronghold is fighting to save this sacred site from being turned into a copper mine by mining giant Rio Tinto. They have appealed to the US supreme court arguing that destroying this land violates their religious freedom. Apache Stronghold is part of a wider movement of indigenous peoples working to protect sacred sites from extractive mining for profit. As part of our commitment to opposing colonization and militarization, we must stop seeing the world around us as a commodity to be consumed. Instead, Apache Stronghold invites people from all faith traditions to join them in prayer as part of renewing our relationship with mother earth.
Tim Nafziger (he/him) is a Mennonite organizer who lives in the Ventura River watershed on the traditional lands of the Chumash people in southern California. He is part of the leadership of Mennonite Action, the Fierce Vulnerability Network and The Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery. He has been engaging with digital communities and social justice movements for more than 25 years as an organizer and strategist. Tim thrives on writing, cross-pollination, relationship building, and teams working for change.
350NH and NH Veterans For Peace are cosponsors of this event.
About NHPA’s bi-weekly Zoom Peace & Justice Conversation Series: 2020’s upheavals brought us to a new moment of reckoning and possibility. How do we want to live in the world? What do we value? How can we make the changes we’ve been yearning for? NH Peace Action has been engaged in working for change for decades. We’d like to bring you into these conversations about issues and options for the future. There is no charge to attend, but your contributions in any amount are greatly appreciated.
