You are invited to a Q&A session being held with three members of the Boston City Council on April 2nd at 6:30pm in Jamaica Plain where we will seek to understand more about the Boston Regional Intelligence Center (BRIC), a fusion center that includes collaboration with federal agencies like the FBI, DHS, as well as several municipalities in the greater Boston area. Thanks to public records requests filed by the Muslim Justice League, we know that the BRIC has been tracking members of the Palestinian solidarity movement. This is also where local police share data with ICE for general enforcement efforts against the immigrant community.
The cities who participate in this fusion center - through the Urban Area Intelligence Initiative - include Brookline, Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Quincy, Revere, Somerville, and Winthrop.
Every year, local government has to approve grants from municipal police agencies which is a way to push back against funding for the BRIC. Next week, we are hosting a Q&A with City Councilor At Large Henry Santana who is also the Chair of the Public Safety Committee, D6 City Councilor Ben Weber, and City Councilor At-Large Julia Mejia to answer our questions about the BRIC.
This might be a useful event for members of your community to understand the type of surveillance that may be taking place of residents.
