LAND DAY No to occupation! Yes to reparations!
Baltimore City’s total acres: 58,996 -
2% of that is in the Black Butterfly
On Land Day alone, 20% of Palestine was seized by the “israeli” occupation.
Land Day is a Palestinian holiday that honors the deep rooted connection Palestinians share with their land, illegally occupied by “Israel” since 1948. On March 30th 1976, the “Israeli Defence forces” murdered six Palestinians and wounded hundreds more simply for protesting “Israel’s” illegal seizure of almost 5,000 acres of Palestinian controlled land.
In Baltimore, the predominantly Black population has been pushed into the “Black Butterfly.” These communities have been under attack for over 25 years. In 2000, the Black community only possessed 2% of the land in Baltimore city, even though they represent 60% of the population. Diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Asthma and other health issues are common within the e Black Butterfly due to the city’s prioritization infrastructure and investments in wealthier and whiter areas.
Systemic failure regarding the Black community’s right to land dates back to the U.S. Civil War and Special Field Order 15, which guaranteed the “40 acres and a mule” to all formerly enslaved African people. Even predating Emancipation, the Black population has been fighting for control of their own livelihoods. This Land Day we honor resilient people of Palestine and of Baltimore who are fighting against continued land theft and occupation.
