Approaching the Israel-Palestine conflict in the classroom one year on

An event for educators interested in holding space for supported discussion of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

By Scotland's Development Education Centres

Jehan Al-Azzawi is a Transition Teacher in Liberton Learning Community. Before becoming a teacher Jehan was an academic specialising in politics and international relations. Her PhD is in Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Edinburgh. Her expertise in this field relates to Islamist political movements, Hamas and Hezbollah in particular.

In December 2023 we hosted a webinar in the context of the Israel-Gaza conflict that was taking place at the time. The webinar explored teacher’s fears about discussing contentious subjects in the classroom. It also outlined whole-school approaches in both primary and secondary schools to provide safe and brave spaces for exploration of the conflict and its impact on our school communities. Teaching resources were also shared to give teachers the necessary background and tools.

More than one year on, what lessons have we learned? Have teachers developed greater confidence to address contentious topics like this one in the classroom? What have teachers' experiences been when they have tried to explore the Gaza conflict with their pupils or school communities? And how can we build on these experiences to continue to develop our capacity as educators to respond to real world events and develop peace education as a core educational outcome?
