Population Transfer from Gaza: A Short History from 1948 to 2025
The Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, in partnership with the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, the African Studies Program, the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, and Georgetown University Qatar, is hosting Jehad Abusalim, Executive Director of the Institute for Palestine Studies-USA, for a talk titled “Population Transfer from Gaza: A Short History from 1948 to 2025” on Tuesday, March 18th at Noon in the CCAS Boardroom (ICC 141).
This lecture will examine the history of displacement plans targeting Gaza, from the Nakba of 1948 to present-day calls for forced displacement. It will explore how Israel and international actors have repeatedly pursued strategies to depopulate Gaza, dismantle its geographic and demographic significance, and erase its role in the broader Palestinian struggle. The discussion will highlight the political and strategic motivations behind these efforts and the steadfast Palestinian resistance to such plans over time. By understanding this history, we can better grasp the roots and implications of today’s escalating threats of ethnic cleansing and forced displacement.
