Behind the Headlines: Reporting on Palestine – A Virtual Conversation for Media Workers
Join us for a public, virtual event that will bring together media workers to discuss the behind-the-scenes challenges faced when reporting on Palestine. Organized by the Freelance Solidarity Project (FSP), a division of the National Writers Union (NWU), and Just Vision, a nonprofit that fills a media gap on Israel-Palestine through independent storytelling and strategic audience engagement, this discussion will delve into critical issues such as retaliation, bias, and censorship faced by journalists, researchers, and other media workers when covering Palestine.
This event will address how these issues have intensified in recent months and provide crucial insight into the role of the U.S. media in manufacturing consent for the genocide, including the stakes that U.S. media workers face when they push back against the anti-Palestine status quo.
Through this conversation, we aim to shed light on the complexities and mounting pressures involved in this vital reporting, offering a platform for discussion and solidarity among those on the frontlines of media coverage.
Panelists:
- Tamara Kharroub – Deputy Executive Director & Senior Fellow at the Arab Center Washington DC and expert on historical and media bias.
- Adam Elmahrek – Freelance journalist and a former investigative reporter for the Los Angeles Times.
- Fadi Abushammala – Journalist from Gaza, Outreach Associate at Just Vision and Visiting Scholar at Georgetown.
- Jenna Martin - NWU member and independent journalist and photographer covering foreign affairs and human rights, including reporting from the West Bank.
- Suhad Babaa (Moderator) – President and Executive Director of Just Vision.
This event is scheduled for Thursday, February 6, at 2 pm ET. It will be a vital conversation for anyone involved in media work or interested in the intersection of journalism and human rights.
