Quincy for Palestine joins the call to boycott Captain America: Brave New World, opening February 14th. The film features the character Sabra, also known as Ruth Bat-Seraph. The character, whose name means “born in Israel” but also refers to a 1982 Palestinian massacre, is a personification of the apartheid state. Ironically, the character’s 1981 comic book appearance was meant to critique the brutality of the conflict!
Although the producers tweaked her character (likely due to calls to boycott), the film’s depiction of her is propaganda that glorifies the ongoing oppression, slaughter and displacement of Palestinians. Being aware of the criticisms and making minor changes to mislead their audience and gaslight their critics instead of eliminating the character entirely sends the wrong message and only reaffirms the need for a boycott. Major studio blockbuster films rely on opening weekends to make profit and predict success, so skipping the movies and saying no to apartheid is especially important this weekend!
