From Jeanette Mathy (For info on the Boston vigil contact her at putfeetonyourprayers@gmail.com) “Al Makhrour is one of the last predominantly Christian villages in the area surrounding Bethlehem, in the West Bank. At this moment, the Israeli military is working with militant Jewish settlers to displace, terrorize, and even ethnically cleanse these indigenous Christians and their neighbors from Christ's birthplace. A prominent family, the Kisiyas, were dispossessed - illegally at the behest of the Jewish National Fund - of their home and land July 31 of this year. If the Kisiyas are not successful in reclaiming their property, which is a UNESCO heritage site, from these Jewish settlers, the Christians there warn that a two-thousand-year-old lively and peaceful religious community will disappear from the very place it began with Jesus’ birth!

Therefore, the people of Al Makhrour and Bethlehem are calling on all sympathizers of all religions, and especially the Christian faith, to stand in solidarity with the village of Al Makhrour and with other people of conscience across the globe. These actions will be coordinated on the 28th and 29th of this month of September, and will take place across the planet in many languages. The Kisiya family statement has asked these gatherings to be public interfaith solidarity prayer vigils. They encourage the use of candles and signs with their requested messaging, ideally hosted in partnership with a church community experienced in interfaith dialogue and familiar with the urgent plight of the Palestinians. Programming is being developed and translated into many different languages, and will highlight prayers and teachings from many different religious traditions, emphasizing love of neighbor and compassion for the dispossessed.”
