Graduate Students United - United Electrical (GSU-UE) Teach-In: Police Brutality and Grad Worker Repression
Friday, August 16 at 11am CST (12pm EDT) on Zoom GSU-UE will host a teach-in on grad worker repression by UCPD and the University’s failure to protect free speech.
The University of Chicago has used police violence to suppress the free speech of graduate workers. Next Friday we will hear from two grad workers who were targeted and assaulted by University of Chicago police officers because of their involvement in peaceful pro-Palestine demonstrations. Both workers have filed grievances against the university, arguing that UCPD’s actions threaten the health and safety of workers on campus. We’ll hear in detail how the university has responded to these claims (spoiler alert: it isn’t great).
We cannot sit by and allow UChicago to downplay and ignore such a blatant threat to worker’s rights. The integrity of our work depends upon our ability to speak freely without fear of violence or retaliation. Such flagrant repression of worker’s free speech should raise alarms for every grad worker. We have a right to a workplace free from police violence, and GSU is determined to defend that right. Come learn more about these cases and how you can stand in solidarity with the workers impacted.
