Summary - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) pledging conference is an opportunity for UN Member States to match their political commitment to the Agency's mandate with sufficient predictable, and flexible financial contributions.
Description - The Ad Hoc Committee for the purpose of announcing voluntary contributions to UNRWA, will convene on 12 July 2024 at 10 a.m. in the Trusteeship Council Chamber. The Secretary-General will be present and will make a statement to Member States concerning the critical role that UNRWA continues to play in providing public-like services such as education, healthcare, food and cash assistance as well as humanitarian assistance for Palestine Refugees across its five fields of operation, including in the Gaza Strip where the Agency is the backbone of the humanitarian operations.
The Secretary-General strongly urges all Member States to announce new or increased contributions, in particular to the programme budget of UNRWA.
UNRWA was created 75 years ago and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to more than 5.9 million registered Palestine Refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine Refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.
UNRWA is looking to UN Member States to:
Reaffirm their political commitment and solidarity towards the Palestine Refugees.
Mobilize international support and advocacy for the Agency's work and unrelenting commitment to UN values, including its critical role in providing humanitarian assistance in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip and increased violence in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Address the Agency's funding situation that is currently unpredictable and unsustainable to avoid recurrent funding crises.
Safeguard UNRWA's critical role in the Gaza Strip both now and within the framework of transition, including to ensure that the children in Gaza can resume learning as soon as possible.
