Ukraine, Gaza, and European Peace Movement Priorities, Building Together: An In-Person Evening with Reiner Braun
The war in Ukraine is increasingly dangerous – perilous. France and Poland, NATO nations, have threatened to send their military forces into Ukraine as trainers or to reinforce Ukrainian defenses in case of a Russian breakthrough. The U.S. and Germany are providing Kyiv missiles and drones with authorization to target them against Russian forces in Russia. This is especially dangerous, as it is the first time weapons supplied by \ U.S. and European nations are being used to attack a rival nuclear power. Russian forces are on the offensive across eastern and Southern Ukraine. In response, senior Russian officials and much of Russian media is calling for the Kremlin to “nuke” Ukraine with no guarantees that nuclear attacks will not trigger escalation to an apocalyptic nuclear war.
The Israeli genocide in Gaza, Hamas resistance, and settler violence in land seizures in the West Bank continue relentlessly, with bombs, famine and chaos claiming still more innocent lives. Germans remain haunted by the legacy of the Nazi Holocaust, and even as increasing numbers of European states opt to formally recognize the Palestinian States, Germany and Britain have joined the United States in supplying Israel with the weapons it needs to continue its war on Gaza.
How are the German and European peace movements responding, and what do they expect of us?
