A Persistent Belonging: the story of the Palestine shelter
A seminar by Dr Samar Maqusi from UCL as part of CEID's series on The Politics of Belonging Under Occupation: Gender, Space and Education.

Architecture and space-making play a fundamental role in the construction and destruction of identity and belonging. Drawing from extensive fieldwork and archival research into the Palestine refugee camp across the five host geographies, this presentation attempts to illustrate what tends to be missing from the dialogue around the concept and materiality of belonging in the Palestinian story. Namely, the historical and spatial understanding into the Palestine refugee camp and the Palestine shelter, and their role in upholding a form of Palestinianhood inside a protracted displacement.
