Healthcare Under Apartheid: Medicine & Social Determinants of Health in Palestine

This lecture will discuss health and healthcare in Palestine through the lens of social determinants of health.

  • It will offer a brief review of history to describe the social, political, and physical landscape of the ongoing Nakba in Palestine that has informed this present moment.

  • Next, it will break down the current circumstances in the Gaza Strip through the lens of these social determinants.

  • The lecture will then explain the role of global trade and economics in the current Israeli assault on Gaza and the West Bank and will detail the impact of this genocide on the planet.

  • Finally, the lecture will conclude with a discussion of the future health implications of the ongoing Nakba within a unified democratic Palestine.

Speakers

  • Dr. Christine Harb, DO, MPH, Resident Physician & Public Health Specialist - Dr. Christine Harb is a queer Palestinian Christian, resident physician, and public health specialist. Born in Iowa and raised between the Midwest and the West Bank, she lived in Ramallah, Palestine for 5 years with her family until the eruption of the Second Intifada. Israel subsequently cut off the electricity and water in the West Bank and bombed her city, forcing her family to flee to the U.S. Dr. Harb has a Master’s of Community and Behavioral Health from the University of Iowa and received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from A.T. Still University. She completed a pre-doctoral fellowship in Medical Education and is currently in her final year of residency in family medicine. Her focus is gender affirming care, reproductive justice, and global health.
