CA Statewide Legal Observer Training
From NENJP Calendar: This is included even though it is listed as specific to CA because the general training will be helpful to activists everywhere.
Are you an activist, organizer, legal worker, law student, lawyer, or community leader? Do you care passionately about defending the right to protest and holding law enforcement accountable? Do you want to know people’s rights when participating in protests and demonstrations? ️
Become a Legal Observer with the NLG! Register today for the California Statewide ** (Virtual!)** Training
💚 What is a Legal Observer? 💚- Legal Observers are volunteers trained by the NLG who show up at protests, marches, or other actions to:
💚Monitor law enforcement activity
💚Support arrested activists
💚Empower protestors and deter police misconduct
💚Document events for future legal action
You don’t need a law degree to participate in mass defense work, and it is vital for folks who are the targets of systemic oppression, especially at the hands of the state and legal system, to have a say in what their local mass defense programs look like. We encourage all community stakeholders to attend this training to learn about the role of legal observers, how to get involved, trauma-informed legal observing and protest aftercare, and how to connect people who have been arrested at an action with jail support.
We will have region-specific breakout rooms to connect you with others in your area and cover any specific information you need to start legal observing locally.
