After millions of us hit the streets in 2020 to protest police murder and call for racial justice, our mass support translated into movements to cut police budgets and campaigns to stop new jail construction. And it also translated into elections: the activation of the uprisings made space for unapologetic racial justice candidates to run- and win.
Rep. Jamaal Bowman was one of those candidates, whose election in New York rode the tailwinds of the uprisings. He saw institutional racism play out as a middle school principal and in his personal life as Black man in New York– and that drove him into the streets where he became a fixture at protests in New York in the summer of 2020. He then unseated a 16-term incumbent and one of the most powerful players of the mainstream Democratic party.
Gaining governing power is part of how we win real change. Rep. Bowman has been a part of the progressive cohort that has led Congress on issues of racial and economic justice.
Join SURJ for a webinar conversion with Rep. Bowman this Wednesday, May 8 at 8 pm ET to hear more about why elections are a part of racial justice work- and our plan to overcome the AIPAC and GOP funding that’s currently targeting Rep. Bowman in his primary race this June.
We’re working for racial justice in the streets, in our own hearts and minds, and at the ballot box.
