As the brutal Gaza war enters its seventh month, the hawkish, pro-Israeli American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, has ramped up its spending against those calling for a ceasefire — throwing tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars to target the pro-peace champions seeking to protect innocent Palestinians and end the war. Yet, in that time, we have also seen that grassroots mobilizing can overcome AIPAC’s millions. This August, Representative Ilhan Omar will be facing another close primary race. Her leadership and perseverance have been critical in tipping the narrative toward peace and justice.
Congresswoman Omar has been one of our strongest pro-peace champions since her historic election in 2018 and has consistently led efforts to reform the hawkish and imperialistic US foreign policy status quo. She has stood up for a world free from tyranny, and most recently looked to block additional weapons shipments to Israel. She has rightly pointed out that “History will remember those that stood their ground on higher moral authority…If we truly wish to uplift humanity, to protect the innocent Palestinians in Gaza, to bring Israeli, American, and international hostages home safely, and hold out hope for long-term sustainable peace, then we must demand a ceasefire now and use all diplomatic tools and leverage to stop an invasion in Rafah from occurring.”
Rep. Omar is steadfast in her pro-peace efforts, despite drawing the ire of right-wing groups and moderates in her own party. She consistently and unabashedly advocates for peace and justice in the world — a much-needed quality at this time when so many others are complacent. She knows that progressive changes to US foreign policy are desperately needed and is willing to put in the effort needed to realize a new approach to our international relations.
Born in Somalia, Ilhan moved to the United States at age 13, as a refugee seeking asylum. Shortly after, she got a taste for public service while translating for her grandfather during local Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) party caucuses. She has served to assist communities, both at home and globally, since.
