In Context Briefing: Israel’s AI Warfare + Growing Efforts to Halt Arms Transfers
Earlier this month, a Local Call/+972 Magazine investigation revealed that the Israeli military is using an AI machine called “Lavender” to identify human targets with little to no oversight, intentionally bombing targets in their homes alongside children and other civilians. In response, White House National Security spokesperson John Kirby noted that the Biden administration was examining the contents of the investigation, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed that he was “deeply troubled” by the revelations.
Revelations such as these are fueling efforts around the world to halt arms transfers and condition military aid to Israel. Pressuring the U.S. and German governments has been key as they supply around 99% of arms imported to Israel. In an unprecedented move, more than 56 Members of Congress, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, signed on to a letter urging President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken to withhold arms transfers to Israel.
