Life and Death Under Humanitarian Law in Gaza and Beyond - A Crown Seminar with Ilana Feldman

Humanitarian law seems both widespread and impotent, with its promises to protect civilians and regulate conflict often seen as unfulfilled and perhaps unattainable. Other critics argue that claims about humanitarian law restraining violence ignores the fact that this framework is deeply rooted in, and also reshapes, colonial and imperial violence. Whether considered a failure or weapon, humanitarian law nonetheless affects lives worldwide. In this Crown Seminar, Ilana Feldman, in conversation with Arzoo Osanloo, will explore how people live and die under this law from an anthropological perspective, focusing particularly on Palestinians in Gaza and beyond.

Ilana Feldman is professor of Anthropology, History, and International Affairs at George Washington University.

Arzoo Osanloo is professor in the Department of Law, Societies, and Justice and the director of the Middle East Center at the University of Washington.
