Decolonizing People and Nature in Palestine and Globally with Prof Mazin Qumsiyeh
Sponsored by the GRALTA Foundation, MAPA Ed Fund, First Parish Church Lincoln
Using as a case study the situation of Palestine and the colonization impact on human and biological diversity, Prof. Mazin Qumsiyeh offers analysis of symptoms, diagnosis, therapy and prognosis towards sustainability of natural and human communities. He articulates how working for environmental justice and for human rights is key to peace and sustainability and not just in Western Asia but globally. He highlights the model work of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability (palestinenature.org).
The founder and volunteer director of the PIBS at Bethlehem University, Prof. Qumsiyeh has taught at a variety of universities including the University of Tennessee, Duke and Yale. His interests span many disciplines including the environmental impact of colonization, environmental and climate justice, cultural heritage, human rights, biodiversity conservation, and cancer. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including Sharing the Land of Canaan.
As co-founders of and volunteer staff at PIBS, Professor Qumsiyeh and his wife Jessie Chang aim to develop long-term support for Palestine in Western countries, and to support and promote the work of the Institute. In early November, they embarked on a month-long trip of the UK, Ireland and the United States. They begin their tour across the US in Massachusetts having given talks in dozens of cities and towns in England, Scotland and Ireland. Earlier this year, they completed a successful 53-day tour of 17 cities in Australia and New Zealand where the professor delivered over 200 talks.
