About the Webinar
On December 8, 2024, a coalition of Syrian opposition forces took control of Syria’s capital, ending more than 60 years of Baath Party rule in the country. Thirteen years after the revolution began, the regime of Bashar al-Assad, who inherited the presidency from his father, Hafez al-Assad, in 2000, came to an end. Many questions and challenges remain for both Syria and the region following the toppling of the Assad regime. How were the opposition forces able to take over so quickly? Why did the Assad regime’s military and security institutions collapse without much of a fight? What role did foreign interference play in Syria’s tragedies and the success of the opposition? What is the current state of affairs in Syria, and who is running the country? And will a democratic transition of power and free and transparent elections take place?
Arab Center Washington DC is convening a panel of experts to unpack the recent developments in Syria, explore the challenges facing the country, and discuss the implications for the region and US policy.
