Book Group Discussion - Minor Detail by Adania Shibli

Adania Shibli’s searing and beautiful short novel Minor Detail opens during the summer of 1949 as Israeli soldiers murder an encampment of Bedouin in the Negev. Among their victims is a teenage girl whom they rape, kill, and bury in the sand. Many years later a young woman living in Ramallah becomes obsessed with this crime that was committed 25 years to the day before she was born. Adania Shibli overlays these narratives of equal length to evoke a present haunted by the past. A finalist for the National Book Award and longlisted for the International Booker Prize, Minor Detail is a powerful meditation on war, memory, and the suffering of the Palestinian people. Published by New Directions, 2020.
