11/20 (Zoom) 8pm - America: A Christian Nation? Says Who? (Kairos Center for Religions, Rights and Social Justice & partners)

America: A Christian Nation? Says Who?

The United States has a long tradition of protecting religion from state interference and protecting the state from religious interference. This tradition has prevented the establishment of an official state religion while welcoming faith-driven advocates into the public square such as the 19th century abolitionists or 20th century civil-rights advocates.

Our separation of church and state is today threatened by political calls for a Christian nation, based on Christian values and beliefs, which supporters claim to be the “true” definition of what it means to be an “American.” This troubling trend will be explored in this webinar.

Speakers:

The Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, Executive Director of the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights and Social Justice and Co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival

Dr. Michael Zweig, Co-Chair of the NYS Poor People’s Campaign - LI Region

The Rev. Holly Haile Thompson, DD, a blood member of the Shinnecock Nation, Long Island
