Curtis Bell, Past President of UUs for Justice in the Middle East
What is happening now in Gaza is deeply disturbing because of the human suffering and the real threat of a devastating regional war. In the short term one must be pessimistic. But the massive worldwide opposition and attention provides an unprecedented possibility for change toward the world that most people want, a multipolar world that respects human life. The talk will cover what is happening, the worldwide response, the role of US imperialism, and where UUs have been and are on the issues raised.
Curtis Bell was born in Bahrain of American parents and went to high school in Beirut Lebanon. While there, he saw the camps of Palestinian refugees around the city, filled with people who had been forced out of their lives and livelihoods in what is now Israel. The experience made a strong impression and moved him toward the Palestinian side of the issue. He is retired now but was a neuroscientist in his professional life. His interest in the Middle East continues. He became an activist against the Iraq war in the fall of 2002 when the Bush Administration and US Congress began preparing the American public for war. He became active in support of Palestinian human rights in 2008 and is a past president of Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East (UUJME.org). UUJME is a UUA Related Organization that works for the human rights of all people in Palestine/Israel. He also has an interest in the social consequences of scientific research and in raising consciousness among his fellow neuroscientists about the potential for misuse of their knowledge.
