International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
29 Nov @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm EST
Special Meeting at UN Headquarters in New York
In accordance with General Assembly resolution 32/40 B of 2 December 1977, the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (Solidarity Day) has been marked annually since 1978, on 29 November, to coincide with the anniversary of the adoption of the UNGA Palestine partition resolution of 1947. This year the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) will hold a Special Meeting to commemorate the event in the ECOSOC Chamber at UNHQ in New York. Events to commemorate the Solidarity Day will also be held at other UN venues worldwide.
The International Day of Solidarity provides an opportunity for the international community to refocus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine remains unresolved and that the Palestinian people are yet to attain their inalienable rights as defined by the General Assembly, namely, the right to self-determination, the right to national independence and sovereignty and the right of return of the refugees.
An exhibit entitled “Palestine – a Land with a People,” will be launched on 29 November at UNHQ in the Visitors’ Lobby. It commemorates the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe), a deeply traumatic event which took place during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war when more than half of the Palestinian people were expelled from or fled their homes and became refugees. This exhibit showcases photographs, videos and art depicting different episodes in the Palestinian journey before, during, and after the Nakba. It serves as a reminder that close to 6 million Palestinians remain refugees to this day, scattered throughout the region. Hundreds of thousands of these refugees have experienced an additional forced displacement while thousands were killed, during the 2023 Gaza war, amid a situation described as a “humanitarian catastrophe” by the Secretary-General.
