No Debate Revisited: Attacks on Palestine as a Proxy for White Supremacy
In 2011 the Canadian Association of University Teachers published the report No Debate: the Israel Lobby and Free Speech at Canadian Universities detailing attempts to derail a York University-Queen’s conference on models of statehood and pathways toward peace in Israel and Palestine. Those events were preceded by the suspension of Dr. Dan Freeman Malloy, then a graduate student at York University, for his involvement in Palestine solidarity organizing on campus. In the subsequent decade, the role of pro-Israel lobby organizations in Canadian universities prompted a range of controversies. This includes, most recently, interventions into hiring processes at the University of Toronto’s law school leading to a censure of the University of Toronto by the Canadian Association of University Teachers. The circumstances producing these events have been discussed in major reports including on Islamophobia in Canada and on the suppression of free speech on Palestine on Canadian campuses.
Dan Freeman-Maloy is a long-time anti-racist activist and researcher and holds a PhD from the University of Exeter. He was a lead organizer of the Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC) at York University for many years and served as Assistant Director of the European Center for Palestine Studies as a PhD student under the supervision of Ilan Pappé. He has since pursued postdoctoral research on liberal Canadian swastika politics with Montreal's Canada Research Chair in Québec and Canadian Studies. He now works as a lead organizer with Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME).
