It is not even about people to people engagement in the usual sense. They do not change anything. The mantra of NSL explains its theory of change, "Change the story, change the world." If you think something is impossible, then chances are you will be right. The tone of the Middle East conversation is dominated by the political that drowns out the personal and ultimately, drowns out the voices of hope.
The tragic stories of the past smother any chance for new dreams to be imagined that might offer a breakthrough. NSL believes that if we can only change the listening, if we can find compelling witnesses to a different kind of hope, witnesses who refuse to let the old politics seduce them into the game of winners and losers, dominance and submission, then we can make a start.
Its time for the under 30's to create their own story. NSL recognizes from its founder's work in Northern Ireland and South Africa that the future is a generational investment, and that NSL is but one of many change initiatives, and a very simple and humble one at that. But that is not the point, the point is to make a start. And the battle to be joined is not between two parties separated by a tragic history. No, the battle is who is to own the future. Will the younger generation stay passive and allow their prospects be determined by those who will not live to endure the consequences of their choices? Or will the new voices of a rising generation step up and compel a hearing by the authenticity of their witness and their genuine desire that they do not want their children to live with the same fears that they have had to endure.
The battle is between the past and the future and whose voices get to shape that. NSL seeks to give the voices of the future a say in that future. But we have to find the voices that most powerfully carry that hope, the people whose story and witness will make people stop and listen.
