For years, U.S. organizers committed to liberation for the Palestinian people have worked to imagine and create a world where all people, from the U.S. to Palestine, are safe and free: from New Orleans Eye on Surveillance Coalition’s win in December passing legislation to ban surveillance technology, including Israeli tech tested on Palestinians; to Demilitarize Durham2Palestine community organizers ending the Deadly Exchange of violent police tactics with Israel; to the Arab Resource and Organizing Center and Stop Urban Shield Coalition members stopping the militarization of disaster response and seeding community-based safety. The possibility of Palestinian liberation and threat of Israeli and U.S. systems of militarized repression are here, too, in our communities. Today I'm excited to share the next step in building our movement, a new national network: Demilitarize US to Palestine.
In the midst of rising authoritarianism and fascism, the need to fight against police militarization and state-sanctioned violence is as important as ever. The Black-led uprisings against police killings in the U.S. last summer were met with violent force, rubber bullets, and tear gas. We see the same systems of mass surveillance, racial profiling, and violent suppression of protest and dissent used by the U.S. and Israel, often in coordination, justified by similar narratives of “national security.”
Systems of racial oppression do not arise independently or in isolation. We know that freedom from state violence in the U.S. is deeply intertwined with freedom from state violence in Palestine—recognizing this is the first step towards our collective liberation.
To strengthen this work and turn our grassroots power into policy change, we’re proud to have helped form this network of organizations that seeks to offer resources for and build strategy between abolitionist campaigns seeking to end state violence and police militarization in the U.S. and Palestine.
As a network we hope to support demilitarize campaigns and strengthen our movements by: offering organizing trainings and resources, sharing strategy across geographies for organizers to apply in their local contexts, and building relationships between organizations and individuals who share the same vision of challenging intertwined systems of oppression and building towards collective liberation, from the U.S. to Palestine.
