For the second summer in a row, Gralta Foundation will be hosting an Israel-Palestine film series in Bemis Hall. This year the goal is primarily to entertain by showcasing the great films, directors, and acting talent that can be found in both Israel and Palestine. Each film will be screened twice.
The first, an Israeli film, The Band's Visit on Sunday, July 8 at 2 PM and repeated on Thursday, July 12 at 7:30 PM. The film was adapted for musical theatre and the Broadway production that opened last year virtually swept the Tony Awards this past weekend.
The Band's Visit is a sensitive, heart-warming tale of an Egyptian police band that arrives in Israel to play at the opening of an Arab cultural center but gets stranded in the wrong town with no buses until morning. It stars two of Israel's greatest actors: the late Ronit Elkabetz and Sasson Gabay.
The Film won eight “Best” Jerusalem Film Academy Awards (actor, actress, supporting actor, director, screenplay, costume design, music), three “bests” at Cannes, and many more awards worldwide. The Broadway musical adaptation just won ten Tony Awards. Two weeks ago, Sasson Gabay landed on Broadway to reprise his film role, replacing Tony Shalhoub.
