SUNDAY, November 6: “War & Priests: Catholic Colleges and Slavery in the Age of Revolution”  with Craig Steven Wilder
“War & Priests” examines the establishment of the first Catholic colleges in the United States in the aftermath of the American Revolution. The first Catholic bishop, John Carroll, was able to fund the expansion of the church from the reestablishment of the slave economy after the war, and a stream of Catholic priests fleeing the revolutions in France and Haiti staffed these new Catholic institutions. –Craig Steven Wilder is the Barton L. Weller Professor of History at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
