As Israel enacts policies of ethnic exclusion and demographic homogenization, the indigenous beauty, diversity, culture, and living history of the holy city are at serious risk of being lost forever. Yet, it is precisely its indigenous diversity, culture and history that makes the city holy—a holiness profaned by the evils of forced displacement, racial supremacy, and cultural erasure. Ultimately, we must do what we can to preserve the holiness of the holy city.

The Jerusalem Metropolitan Bill is about the planned official annexation of Israeli settlement blocs north, east, and south of Jerusalem and threatens the future of Palestinian life in Jerusalem. For its part, E1 Settlement expansion severs the West Bank into north and south enclaves. While Gaza continues to be a concern of grave humanitarian concern, these developments in Jerusalem and the West Bank are equally urgent for the future of Palestinian life, not to mention any viability for a future Palestinian state.
